GOP retains strong control of both houses of the State Legislature

Based on unofficial results, Republicans have maintained strong control of both the state Senate and Assembly but did not win enough seats in either house for a two-thirds supermajority where they would be able to override Gov. Evers vetoes without Democrat votes.

Republicans picked up two seats in the Senate, while Dems defeated two Assembly GOP incumbents. Right now the GOP majorities stand at 21-12 in the Senate and 61-38 in the Assembly.

Results from Wispolitics.com:

“Former DATCP Secretary Brad Pfaff edged former GOP state Sen. Dan Kapanke in the open 32nd SD in the La Crosse area. But Green Bay attorney Eric Wimberger beat DePere Ald. Jonathon Hansen in the Green Bay area seat represented by the retiring Dave Hansen, D-Green Bay. And GOP Rep. Rob Stafsholt defeated Sen. Patty Schachtner, D-Somerset.”

“In the 13th AD, Dem Sara Rodriguez was at 51 percent, while Rep. Rob Hutton, R-Brookfield, was at 49 percent, according to unofficial returns.

“In the 23rd AD, Dem Deb Andraca was at 51.6 percent compared to Mequon Republican Rep. Jim Ott’s 48.4 percent.

“Meanwhile, Rep. Nick Milroy, D-South Range, was clinging to a narrow lead with all precincts reporting. He was at 50.2 percent to 49.8 percent for Republican Keith Kern, a difference of 139 votes.”

According to the Wheeler Report, Senate Republicans are scheduled to meet tomorrow, November 5, to select new leadership. Senator Devin LeMahieu (R-Oostburg) and Senator Roger Roth (R-Appleton) are vying to replace newly-elected Congressman Scott Fitzgerald as Senate Majority Leader.

The Assembly Republican Caucus and both Democratic caucuses are convening on Tuesday, November 10, to select their leaders.
