On Tuesday, September 22, 2020, the Joint Legislative Council will host an online discussion on the experiences of individuals and families navigating pathways to diagnosis, treatment, and support of autism as told by an occupational therapist with specialized training in working with children with autism, navigators who work in various parts of the state, and the co-director of a clinic providing innovative approaches to autism services in Milwaukee.

This session will begin at 2:00 p.m. and is the third of four sessions on the topic of autism.  It will be covered live on WisconsinEye.

The fourth and final discussion session will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 2:00 p.m., and will focus on state policies affecting payment for autism services, a topic of interest to schools and school leaders.

The Symposia Series on Early Access to Autism Treatment is intended to present information on barriers to Wisconsin families and children in accessing early diagnosis and treatment of autism. It is designed to help policymakers identify options for enhancing access to early diagnosis of autism and promoting treatment that is based on evidence-based medical practices.

The series began with a review of the issues affecting early diagnosis and treatment of autism, current state Medicaid polices and a discussion on the availability of screening and diagnosis.

It continued with a review of the availability of autism treatment providers throughout the state, including a discussion about access to early diagnosis and applied behavioral treatment.  It featured two professionals with decades of experience who work as clinical directors of programs in the state.
