2023 Fall Regional Meetings

The Fall Regional Meetings take place in every WASB region across the state and provide an opportunity to network with area board members, celebrate accomplishments and learn about what the WASB is doing for you. In Regions 3, 6, 8, 12 and 14, your board voted for or will be voting for a WASB regional director.

The WASB will host an online regional meeting on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. Registration is optional, though it is required to receive Member Recognition Points.

Pre-Regional Meeting Workshop: School Board Member Responsibilities Under Public Records Law

4 p.m. – Registration Begins
4:30-6 p.m. – Workshop Program

Workshop: School Board Member Responsibilities Under Public Records Law

Individual school board members create a number of public records pertaining to school district business during the course of their tenure on the school board. Individual board members may also request and obtain records, statistics and reports, as directed by the board and as required by their office (president, vice president, clerk or treasurer). Records may also be available to board members as a parent/guardian or as public records.

More than ever, individual board members find themselves being asked to respond to public records requests for records that are in their possession or where they are a record subject mentioned in the responsive record. This workshop will address individual board members’ responsibilities under the public records law, answer frequently asked questions that board members have regarding their records and run through scenarios that board members may face regarding public records, including archiving records, responding to records requests and the unique records responsibilities that may come with social media use.

Workshop registration is $75. Attendees receive a $10 discount if registered for a workshop and Regional Meeting.

Note: The Pre-Regional Meeting Workshops are held in the same facility as the Regional Meeting. To assist our venues, please do not arrive before 3:45 p.m.

7-8:30 p.m. – Regional Meeting Program

Regional Director Welcome

Member Recognition Awards
At each Regional Meeting, the WASB recognizes school board members who have reached a new achievement level in the WASB Member Recognition Program by attending and participating in activities and events sponsored by the WASB.

Elections (Regions 3, 6, 8, 12 and 14)
Each member school board and CESA board has one vote to elect a WASB regional director, who serve staggered, three-year terms.

Feature Presentation: School Board Accountability Practices
An experienced WASB consultant will kick off this activity by reviewing the concept of school board accountability. School board members will then share accountability practices with each other in a round-table discussion format. Board members will broaden their understanding of their stakeholders’ expectations for accountability and leave with new ideas to demonstrate their responsible stewardship for students, parents and citizens.

Legislative Update
WASB government relations staff will report on what was included in the budget, including fiscal and policy provisions, and other key pieces of preK-12-related legislation that have passed or are under consideration.

Executive Director’s Report
Dan Rossmiller, WASB executive director, will conclude the evening with a report to members about the activities and direction of the WASB.

Registration Note: Online registration will be open for each regional meeting until 8 a.m. on the Friday preceding the week of the event. For example, for a regional meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 18, online registration closes at 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13.

To register after this date, email the WASB or call us at 608-257-2622 and we’ll be happy to help get you signed up. We also offer on-site registration.
