Pre-Regional Meeting Workshop: Students Can't Learn If They're Not There
Student success starts with showing up. Yet in the 2023–24 school year, nearly 1 in 5 Wisconsin K–12 students missed more than 10 days of school. That’s a challenge we can’t afford to ignore—and one we can address.
This 90-minute workshop was designed to help school leaders take meaningful action. The workshop, which was held prior to each Regional Meeting, began with a clear overview of Wisconsin’s compulsory attendance laws, presented by WASB legal counsel. Then, WASB consultants shared proven, practical strategies that districts across the state are using to improve attendance and re-engage students.
The workshop was designed to leave attendees with:
- A solid understanding of the legal framework around attendance and truancy.
- Tools to communicate effectively with families.
- Policy ideas that support student engagement.
- Real-world examples of what’s working in Wisconsin schools.
An online workshop was held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, on Zoom. The meeting was recorded and made available for registrants to view at their convenience.
If you attended any of the workshops and are seeking a copy of the presentation, contact WASB Director of Communications Brock Fritz.
