Draft bills reflecting a number of recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding are currently being circulated for co-signers. The action comes nearly five months after the Commission met at the State Capitol in December to finalize a set of recommendations to the Legislature.
Legislator members of the Commission met last month to decide which of the recommendations that had been put into bill form would be proposed for introduction. They also decided who will be the lead author(s) of each proposed bill.
This chart details the decisions made during that discussion.
It is worth noting that while the Commission operated in a fairly bipartisan fashion, some partisan splits have developed since its recommendations were put forward. As evidence, all of the proposals to be offered for introduction will be authored by Republican lawmakers. In addition, several Commission recommendations that align closely with proposals included in the governor’s proposed budget have either not been drafted in bill form or have not found a legislator willing to introduce them.
This suggests the recommendations chosen to be advanced as GOP-authored bills may provide a likely preview of several of the K-12 education proposals legislative Republicans are likely to offer as a counter proposal to the budget proposed by the governor.
