From time to time we highlight exemplary advocacy efforts by school boards. Today, as part of that effort, we want to call your attention to a proclamation and letter issued by the Appleton Area School Board.
The proclamation declares April 24 to be “Advocate for Kids in the Appleton Area Day” and urges “all citizens and stakeholders to support the future of our children by attending the Joint Finance Committee (budget) hearing in Green Bay and/or contacting the Governor and Legislators to advocate for the areas of needs for all children in the Appleton Area School District.”
The letter, addressed to members of the Legislature’s budget writing Joint Finance Committee, sets forth a number of the board’s concerns about K-12 education funding it asks be addressed in the 2019-21 state budget and provides clear and concise explanations for the positions expressed by the board regarding each concern raised.
Both are excellent examples of how school boards can communicate their concerns to lawmakers and work to engage their communities on behalf of local public schools. We commend these to your attention.
Again, thanks to all boards and board members who are communicating their concerns to lawmakers as they prepare to debate the 2019-21 state budget.
