2025 New School Board Member Gatherings

The WASB will host 15 in-person meetings around the state from April 17-24 to introduce new school board members to the WASB’s services, as well as the laws that affect board service and governance. Additionally, a virtual meeting will be held on May 1 for new school board members statewide.

Each New School Board Member Gathering will be held from 7-9 p.m. There is no cost or need to register for this event. Prepare by reviewing our landing page for new school board members.

Earn points for attending. WASB members will earn five Member Recognition points for attending an in-person or virtual New School Board Member Gathering.

Open Meetings Law

In order to avoid the perception that a board is violating the Open Meetings Law, a district may wish to post a notice, in accordance with its local board policy, that communicates to the community that a certain number of board members and/or other district officials will be attending the New School Board Member Gathering. This type of notice should explicitly state that the board will not convene or conduct any board business during the meeting. Please see below for a WASB Legal Comment that addresses these type of open meeting law issues in the context of our State Education Convention which are analogous to a New School Board Member Gathering.
