2021 Fall Regional Meetings

Network with colleagues and WASB staff

Join us at your Regional Meeting this fall to network with area board members, celebrate accomplishments, and learn about the WASB’s activities and plans. The Regional Meetings will feature a networking opportunity, legislative update and report from WASB Executive Director John Ashley.

In Regions 1, 4, 9, 10 and 13, your board will be voting for a WASB regional director. (WASB directors serve staggered three-year terms.) Click on “Election” in the schedule below for information about each of the regional elections.

Prior to your Regional Meeting, take part in an optional workshop on effective community engagement at board meetings led by an experienced WASB attorney and consultant.

New in 2021: One statewide, online Regional Meeting and workshop is scheduled for Oct. 27. The online workshop begins at 5 pm with the online Regional Meeting beginning at 7 pm. The programs are the same as the in-person events. See below for details.

Pre-Regional Meeting Program, 4-6 pm*

Workshop: Effective Community Engagement at Board Meetings

4 pm: Registration begins (please do not arrive before 3:45 pm)
4:30 – 6 pm: Workshop program*

Effectively engaging with members of the public and staff during school board meetings requires thoughtful planning for the meeting logistics as well as pre- and post-meeting activities.

During this workshop, a WASB staff counsel will be joined by a WASB consultant (former school district administrator) to review best practices for establishing the board agenda, structuring the public comment period for productive input by community members and staff, ensuring accessibility and determining other meeting logistics. They will also discuss ways to engage with community members and staff before and after the meeting to promote productive dialogues.

Elections (Regions 1, 4, 9, 10 and 13)
Each member school board and CESA board has one vote to elect a WASB regional director, who serve staggered, three-year terms.

Feature Program
It’s been a challenging year. We’ll take some time for board members to network and learn from each other.

Legislative Update
The 2021-23 state budget has been signed into law. Learn more about what was and wasn’t included in the budget and what issues remain unresolved. The WASB government relations staff will give you the latest information on what’s happening at the state Capitol, including which bills are currently being debated and which may still be on the way.

Open Meetings Law

In order to avoid the perception that a board is violating the Open Meetings Law, a district may wish to post a notice, in accordance with its local board policy, that communicates to the community that a certain number of board members and/or other district officials will be attending the regional meeting. This type of notice should explicitly state that the board will not convene or conduct any board business during the regional meeting. Please see below for a WASB legal comment that addresses these type of open meeting law issues in the context of our joint convention which are analogous to a regional meeting.
