The non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau (LFB) has released its summary of the governor’s proposed budget bill. It is available online. (See links below.)
Considered by lawmakers to be the definitive analysis, the LFB summary document breaks the budget bill down on an agency-by-agency basis, according to the state agency responsible for administering the particular program(s) being funded. Most K-12 provisions will be found under Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
The release of this comprehensive explanatory document generally signals the start of the Joint Finance Committee’s discussion and debate of the budget bill. Indeed, agency budget briefings are scheduled to begin next week. (View JFC notice for April 3 & 4 agency briefings.)
The DPI is the first agency scheduled to appear before the JFC to answer questions about its budget request and the items included in the proposed budget. State Superintendent Carolyn Stanford Taylor and the DPI is scheduled to appear before the committee next Wednesday morning (April 3) at 10:00 a.m..
The first JFC budget hearing at which members of the public will be invited to testify is tentatively scheduled for Friday, April 5 in Janesville. (See previous post.) As yet, however, no public notice has been released for this hearing and no time or place has been announced. WASB will publish updates as we receive them.
